DPA microphone on DXD recording
DPA microphones have been used for a groundbreaking project – the first-ever recordings in the new DXD (Digital eXtreme Definition) format being made by Norwegian company Lindberg Lyd AS. DXD is a high sampling rate and multi-bit processing format that preserves the audio quality of DSD in terms of pulse response and bandwidth compared to conventional PCM, and is available to consumers in SACD format.
Lindberg is one of the first companies in Europe to utilise DXD- and SACD-technology in commercial audio production. The signal path is as simple and short as it is technically advanced and the company has devised a formula for the recordings, which they describe as: “Fantastic musicians and adventurous music in a beautiful venue, recorded by DPA 130V microphones…”

The recording of Mozart's violin concertos took place in Selbu Church in Norway with violinist Marianne Thorsen and the Trondheim Soloists. “For this project we wanted to optimise the recording for the multi-channel layer of the SACD-format,” explains Morten Lindberg, the project’s recording producer and balance engineer, who worked together with recording engineer Hans Peter L'Orange. “The stereo became second priority. Previously we’d tried putting up individual microphones for the 5.1 and the stereo, but we found it very hard to monitor both with equal priority.”
The orchestra formed a circle around the microphone set-up, similar to the loudspeakers in a Dolby 5.1 rated for music only, but scaled down to around a quarter in terms of distances. DPA 4003 omnis were used for left and right, with the 50mm acoustic pressure equalisers lending a slight focus and direction. For the centre channel, Lindberg found that a large diaphragm DPA 4041 gave the soloist a nice presence, while the left and right rear surround mics were DPA 4016 wide cardioids.
“The biggest surprise when we started the transition from stereo to multi-channel two years ago, was to find that traditional ambient microphones weren’t much good as rear channels explains Lindberg. “All five channels are equally important, and need to relate to each other rather tightly in time and colour. Our all-DPA microphone rig makes this possible. For the Lfe-channel we’re a little more conservative; a DPA 4012 cardioid on the double bass is delayed to fit in with the main set-up.”
“The listener is placed in such a way to not only hear, but feel the presence of the players around you,” said a reviewer of the Mozart DXD recording on SA-CD.net. “The balance is quite remarkable and life-like, and truly gives you the feeling of being there. The recording quality is I believe quite the best there is in the world today."
